~Added Meaning~

I've been going back and listening to the Chronicles of Narnia on audiobook. Hearing them again, especially the Horse and His Boy and the Silver Chair, has really been amazing because of the symbolism that I missed as a younger Christian.

NOTE: Tricia, and anyone else who wants to keep themselves spoiler free, skip the rest of this entry and read later after reading.

In the Horse and His Boy, I'd have to say the main theme of it is God's providence and sovereignty in our lives. When Aslan reveals that all of the lions were He and that He had been the one to push the boat to shore when Shasta was a baby, you can grasp the meaning of God's providence. This book also mirrors how God is always with us, even when we can't see Him, feel Him, or recognize Him.

In the Silver Chair, C. S. Lewis shows how God uses our weaknesses to glorify Himself. Jill was given a specific set of instructions for herself and Eustace to follow, and they messed up pretty much every single one. Yet Aslan (like God) guided them and used their disobedience, quarrels, and weaknesses to find the lost prince. Like Romans 8:28, All things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.

You said it well about Horse and His Boy. It illustrates God's constant steering of events in our lives. Also, even the lion that scratched her was Aslan. He disciplines us in love when He has to. Here's a good quote from the story: "I was quite safe. That is why the Lion kept on my left. He was between me and the edge all the time." That says it all. Thank you, Jesus My Lion!
Here's a great quote from Puddleglum in Silver Chair: "And you must always remember there's one good thing about being trapped down here: It'll save funeral expenses."
